10 killed after New Year’s celebrations in the US hit by truck

At least 10 people were killed and 30 injured when a truck plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Wednesday, the BBC reported, citing New Orleans city officials.

CBS News reported, citing witnesses, that the truck drove into the crowd at high speed, then the driver got out and started firing, prompting police to return fire. But the suspect died during a shootout with police, a police source told the Associated Press.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell called the incident a “terror attack.” Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating what happened when the vehicle plowed into the crowd early Wednesday morning.
“Initial reports indicate that a vehicle may have plowed into a group of people.” “No injuries have been reported, but fatalities have been reported,” a New Orleans police spokesman told CBS News. Video of the incident circulating on social media showed several injured people lying on the ground, according to the BBC.

The incident occurred near the end of the city’s New Year’s celebrations and just hours before the kickoff of the Allstate Bowl, a college football quarterfinal game expected to draw thousands of people, at the city’s Caesars Superdome.
