World Brain Tumor Day is observed every year on June 8 to spread awareness about brain tumors and their serious effects on health. A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells in the brain that can affect memory, movement, and other important body functions. Early detection and proper treatment are very important for saving lives.
According to GLOBOCAN, a global cancer tracking platform, over 3 lakh cases of brain tumors are reported every year around the world. In India, nearly 40,000 people are diagnosed with brain tumors each year.
One of the major causes of brain tumors is smoking. Cigarettes and other tobacco products contain harmful chemicals known as carcinogens. These chemicals can damage the DNA in cells, which may lead to the development of cancer, including brain tumors. Smoking can also weaken the blood-brain barrier, which normally protects the brain. When this barrier is damaged, harmful substances can enter the brain more easily and increase the risk of tumors.
As per research from Global Action to End Smoking, around 25.3 crore Indians aged 15 and above use tobacco. This includes 20 crore men and 5.3 crore women. India is the second-largest tobacco-consuming country in the world after China. Because of this high number, the risk of brain tumors is also greater in the Indian population.
On World Brain Tumor Day, it is important to spread awareness about the dangers of tobacco and encourage healthy living. Quitting smoking, going for regular check-ups, and learning the symptoms of brain tumors can help save lives.
Let’s use this day to educate ourselves and others about brain health and the importance of early detection and prevention.
