The Centre has decided to deploy the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the Bhakra Dam. This comes amid rising tension between Punjab and Haryana over water sharing. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs approved the deployment.
A total of 296 CISF personnel will be stationed at the dam. They will serve in the security wing of the Bhakra Dam project at Nangal. The decision follows increased deployment by Punjab Police near the dam. Tensions rose after protesters gheraoed BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi at a rest house. He was overseeing the release of additional water to Haryana at the time.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has been informed of the deployment. A letter was sent to the Director, Security and Consultancy, BBMB. The Board has been asked to make arrangements for the CISF. This includes accommodation, transport, communication tools, and other security equipment.
This action comes during a politically tense moment. Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had just celebrated stopping the release of extra water to Haryana. Haryana had already used its full share for the September 2024 to May 2025 period. The Punjab government claimed this as a major success.
The ongoing water-sharing issue has created unrest in the region. The Bhakra Dam is crucial for irrigation and drinking water supply. Both states depend heavily on its resources.
With CISF deployment, the Centre aims to ensure safety and prevent escalation. Security around the dam is now a priority. The situation remains tense, but the move is seen as a step to restore order.
