Pope Francis, the first pope from Latin America, has died, the Vatican announced in a video statement on Monday. He was 88 years old. His time as leader of the Catholic Church was sometimes difficult, as he tried to make big changes in an old and traditional institution.
He had recently recovered from a serious illness caused by double pneumonia.
