Rekha Gupta Appointed as New Chief Minister of Delhi

In a major political shift, Rekha Gupta has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) return to power in the national capital after 27 years. The BJP secured a decisive victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats and replacing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which managed to secure only 22 seats.

Rekha Gupta, a seasoned politician and former mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, has been a prominent figure in the BJP for several years. Her political career began during her tenure as President of the Delhi University Students’ Union in 1996-97. Over the years, she has held various key positions within the party, including National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha and General Secretary of the Delhi state unit.

Born in 1974 in Haryana, Gupta pursued her education at Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College and later obtained a law degree. She has been actively involved in politics since her student days, working with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The recent election results saw the defeat of several prominent AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Atishi Marlena, who had assumed office in 2024 after Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation. The BJP’s victory is attributed to a combination of factors, including a divided opposition and strong support from middle-class voters.

As she takes charge, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has pledged to prioritize issues such as pollution control, infrastructure development, and overall governance improvements in Delhi. Her leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the administration and address key concerns of the city’s residents.
