Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested he may reduce the high tariffs imposed on Chinese imports, acknowledging that the current rates have brought trade between the two largest global economies to a near halt.
In an appearance on a channel, Trump stated, “I will reduce the tax on China at any time, because if this is not done then it will not be possible to trade with them, and they want to do business.”
Trump also pointed to signs of economic distress in China, noting that factory activity is in its worst state since 2023 and that export orders have dropped sharply.
As part of his “America First” agenda, Trump had implemented a 10% tariff on all imports to the U.S., but on April 20, the tariff on Chinese goods was significantly increased to 145%. China responded by slapping tariffs of up to 125% on American products in retaliation.
